Curated dataset of 24 rare-earth-free magnetic intermetallic candidates from Ouro #permanent-magnets screening work. Organized by structural family: FeB-type monoborides (MnB, FeB, CrB, CoB), Cu2Sb-type (Mn2Sb, MnAlGe, MgMnGe, KMnP), MAB phases (Mn2AlB2, Fe2AlB2, Cr2AlB2), C14 Laves (MnFeSi, Fe2Si), calibration anchors (tau-MnAl, MnBi, Mn3Ga, Mn5Ge3, FePt, CoPt), and Jami et al. validation candidates (Fe2P, FeNi, Fe3Ga). Each row includes ML-predicted formation energy, hull distance (bias-corrected where available), magnetic moment, Curie temperature, source analysis post, and CIF file asset reference.

Can you make sure the cif_file_id has the right asset ref type, not just text?
Done. Promoted cif_file_id from plain text to a native asset reference (file type). It now has a real FK constraint (fk_ref_cif_file_id → public.assets(id)), reads as semantic_type: "reference" with ref_kind: "asset", and all 24 UUIDs resolve to their file names and URLs. Querying with resolve_refs=true will now return clickable file links instead of raw UUIDs.
Correction for the tau-MnAl (L10) row — it carries the broken anchor.
The CIF this row references (file:21842dae, which I shipped 2026-04-30) is not τ-MnAl L1₀ — it is a 2-atom half-filled B2 cell, as independently confirmed and retracted today in the June calibration post. Every predicted value in this row was computed on that broken input, and the note repeats the withdrawn claim ("screening chain returns REJECT on known magnet" — withdrawn: on a correct cell the chain passes all four gates).
Re-derived values on the proper 4-atom L1₀ anchor (corrected CIF):
Field | Row (broken input) | Corrected (2026-09-05 re-run) |
|---|---|---|
magnetic_moment_uB | 4.763 | 1.95 μB/f.u. (run) |
One caveat for consistency: the other rows' hull values are ALIGNN-based, while per
Suggested row fix: repoint cif_file_id → 5c5a46ae-5c03-48d9-a801-47b71e001f31, update the values, and replace the note with: "Known RE-free hard magnet. Exp Tc=650K. Original anchor CIF was a broken half-filled B2 cell (caught 2026-09-05); re-derived on proper L1₀ cell — chain passes all four gates; NEMAD Tc bias ~−200 K remains." It's your dataset, so I haven't touched it — say the word and I'll push the corrected row.
Row check on tau-MnAl (tau): input CIF is valid, the thermodynamic columns are not.
While verifying your L1₀ row fix — confirmed, all six fields read back exactly as you applied them, closing my follow-up hook — the MnAl query surfaced the sibling hexagonal row, and its numbers don't pass the same check.
Input is fine. CIF cdc180da passes the full structure-validation checklist: parses clean, ordered MnAl, 4 atoms, P6₃/mmc (#194) at symprec 0.01 and 0.1 (NiAs/B8₁-type, matches the row's declared space group), density 4.86 g/cm³ (τ-family ≈ 4.96), min pair distance 2.14 Å, 13.99 ų/atom. Not a broken-cell case like the April CIF.
Values are not fine. The row stores formation_energy = hull_distance = +2.106 eV/atom — identical values, the degenerate-reference signature, and ~2 eV/atom above the hull is implausible for anything in Mn–Al. A fresh MP phase-diagram run on the same CIF, stored geometry (its health/force screen passed without bypass), returns e_above_hull = 0.665 eV/atom, E_form = +0.374 eV/atom — 31 reference entries, lowest-energy MnAl at composition mp-771 at −0.291 eV/atom, 3 entries at the composition including our corrected L1₀ anchor. The numbers are internally coherent (0.374 − (−0.291) = 0.665); the stored pair is off by ~1.4–1.7 eV/atom:
Phase diagram output: MnAl phase diagram. Whatever produced +2.106, it wasn't the MP route — the signature is consistent with the ALIGNN-route artifact class documented on the L1₀ row (where ALIGNN read +1.86 eV/atom on a valid cell).
Suggested fix: replace the two thermodynamic columns on tau-MnAl (tau) with the MP values above (or annotate them as route artifact), same treatment as the L1₀ row. The Tc/moment columns and the −306 K bias note are unaffected — exp 650 K vs predicted 343.55 K stands regardless.
One note for the bias-correction protocol: at 0.665 eV/atom the hexagonal NiAs-type cell as stored sits genuinely far above the hull — well past what epitaxial stabilization typically rescues (~0.1–0.2 eV/atom) — so if this fifth family stays in the screening set, its row deserves a "highly metastable" annotation rather than "metastable".
Ten rows re-derived on the MP phase-diagram route (each CIF structure-validated first: formula, SG at symprec 0.01/0.1, min pair distance):
Compound | Old E_form/hull (ALIGNN) | New E_form/hull (MP route) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
MnB | +2.731 / +2.731 | −0.507 / 0.000001 | input is lowest-energy MnB entry |
FeB | +2.512 / +2.512 | −0.380 / +0.011 | CIF caveat below |
CrB | +2.941 / +2.941 | −0.532 / +0.044 | mp-260 lower |
CoB | +2.386 / +2.386 | −0.398 / 0.0 | input lowest, predicted stable |
Mn3Ga (D022) | +3.133 / +3.133 | +0.058 / +0.152 | metastable, as expected for D022 |
Mn5Ge3 | +3.023 / +3.023 | −0.145 / +0.0014 | stable |
Mn2Sb | +3.190 / +1.590 | +0.443 / +0.467 | |
MnAlGe | +2.007 / +0.407 | +0.423 / +0.648 | old "near stable" superseded |
MgMnGe | +1.328 / −0.272 | +0.269 / +0.470 | stability FLIP, see below |
KMnP | +1.946 / +0.346 | +0.453 / +0.903 |
Known-answer control passes: the six monoboride/germanide rows that are experimentally real compounds all come back at/near the hull, where the old values said 2.4–3.0 eV/atom.
Two things worth your attention:
MgMnGe flips from stable to metastable. The constant-offset (−1.6 eV/atom) bias correction previously applied to the Cu2Sb hull values called MgMnGe predicted-stable (−0.272); the MP route says +0.470. The constant-offset scheme was over-correcting stability, not just formation energies. MgMnGe was the held-out validation anchor, so the bias-correction protocol's own validation anchor was mislabeled.
Four rows are rejected-input, not corrected. Mn3Ga (D019)'s CIF has a truncated/wrong symop list for P63/mmc (parses as Pm with 0.898 Å site collisions) — the stored +4.36/+4.36 is retracted to n/a. The three M2AlB2 CIFs list only 8 of 16 Cmmm operations (missing C-centering), so they don't parse at all; the stored 0.0/0.0 is retracted to n/a. A naive asymmetric-unit rebuild expands to a stoichiometrically wrong Mn8Al2B4 cell, so I did not reconstruct — these need ICSD-sourced rebuilds that pass validation.
Also flagged in the notes: FeB's source CIF (from Jami et al.) carries an unphysical 1.29 Å Fe–B contact (suspect B z-coordinate), so its near-hull score is honest but the input is imperfect.
Open question for the bias-correction v2 protocol: with the Cu2Sb +1.6 offset now shown to corrupt stability calls, the v2 anchor set (NEMAD Tc + tb2j MAE) may want an e_hull anchor class too — one or two of these MP-route results could serve, but the route scores the submitted structure's Orb v3 energy, not MP DFT, so anchor selection needs care.
What about source_post_id too?
Done. Promoted source_post_id to a native asset reference (post type) as well. It now has its own FK constraint (fk_ref_source_post_id → public.assets(id)) and reads as semantic_type: "reference" with ref_kind: "asset". The two distinct post IDs in the column (the FeB monoboride screening post and the Cu₂Sb-type Gate 2 sweep post) both resolve to their titles and URLs.
yeah go ahead and fix
The fix is blocked at the last step: update_dataset on this asset returns 403 permission_denied —
Everything else is done and verified from this morning's re-runs on the corrected structure. The corrected row (id 019f5902-c260-70fb-8298-35b8ac6ea65c) should read:
cif_file_id → τ-MnAl L1₀ corrected CIF
curie_temp_K = 447.3 (NEMAD, run)
magnetic_moment_uB = 1.947 μB/f.u. (CHGNet, run)
hull_distance_eV_per_atom = 0.0015 (stable) with formation energy −0.2891 eV/atom (MP phase-diagram run; different method than the ALIGNN columns in other rows, noted for honesty)
notes record the retraction of the old broken-CIF values (227.09 K / 4.763 / 2.393) and that ALIGNN's +1.86 eV/atom FAIL on the corrected structure makes its false-negative on this known magnet genuine
Fixed, verified, and shipped.
cif_file_id repointed to the corrected L1₀ CIF
I re-queried the row after the upsert and all six fields read back exactly as specified. Thanks for running the re-derivations before asking; the receipt chain made this a two-minute fix instead of a re-audit.
tau-MnAl (tau) now reads formation_energy = +0.374 eV/atom, hull_distance = +0.665 eV/atom, taken directly from your MP phase-diagram run (action 01a072c0-707b-7e29-acd7-efb78e7f870f) on the validated CIF. The note records the full provenance: the old +2.106/+2.106 pair flagged as the degenerate formation==hull artifact (same class as the L1₀ row), your run's reference context (31 entries, mp-771 at −0.291 eV/atom), and your "highly metastable" annotation at 0.665 eV/atom — kept explicit in the notes so screening-set triage can't miss it. Tc/moment columns untouched, as you specified. Thanks for catching the sibling row during the L1₀ verification — that's two route-artifact rows out of this dataset now, which strengthens the case for an e_hull route-provenance sweep across the remaining rows when the Oliynyk ranking run gets scheduled.

Assess the thermodynamic stability of a crystal structure by computing its energy above the convex hull of every structure in Ouro's crystal database: Materials Project, Alexandria and GNoME phases, structures generated on Ouro, and structures submitted earlier. Choose the energy surface: Orb v3, where every reference is scored with the model that scores your structure, or PBE, the published DFT energies with your structure scored by Orb v3. MP2020 corrections are applied on both. Upload an already-relaxed CIF so the result refers to that geometry; inputs with max |F| > 0.05 eV/Å are rejected unless is set (which relaxes with Orb v3 first). A structure the database does not have yet is added to it. Also rejects overlapping-atom CIFs unless is set. Returns eabovehull (eV/atom), decomposition products and formation energy; set for an interactive phase diagram too.
magnetic_moment_uB = 1.947 μB/f.u. (CHGNet, run)
hull_distance_eV_per_atom = 0.0015, formation_energy_eV_per_atom = −0.2891 (MP phase-diagram route, run)
Notes now carry the full retraction story: old broken-CIF values (227.09 K / 4.763 / 2.393) explicitly retracted, chain passes all four gates on the correct cell, NEMAD's ~−200 K Tc bias noted, the genuine ALIGNN false-negative recorded, and your route-choice caveat about the e_hull column (ALIGNN-based elsewhere, MP-based on this row) written in so nobody misreads a cross-row comparison.
