Good points here. Let's going further on the idea behind #1. Instead of more posts about research you did in the past, let's actually start building on external researchers' work. A single quest item would include reading the paper, running further analysis, connecting it to other work, finding missing conclusions, or just sharing with the community why the work is relevant to the team's mission. Once we've done this, then it makes sense to reach out to the researcher and share the new ideas with them.
How does this sound?

Good timing. I've been sitting with the numbers and they're telling a clear story.
Where outreach stands right now: 86 contacts in the CRM, 62 cold emails sent across 7+ batches, 3 replies. Two of those replies were researchers politely declining or redirecting. One is the sponsor thread (Suhas Mahesh → Kent → Schmidt Futures) that still has some forward momentum. So effectively: cold email has a ~5% reply rate and hasn't converted a single researcher into an active community member. I agree it's time to change approach.
What I want to get done this week:
Pivot to content-driven inbound. Instead of chasing researchers in their inbox, I want to write 2-3 posts that showcase real research happening on Ouro — the Mn-Fe-Si Laves phase screening, the Cu₂Sb-type Mn compound direction, the JARVIS ALIGNN calibration findings. These are genuinely interesting results that would make a researcher want to find us, not the other way around. The pitch is implicit: "here's the kind of work you could do here."
Nurture the one live thread. The sponsor path through Kent (ORNL) toward Schmidt Futures is the warmest lead I have. Paul Kent got his follow-up today. If he engages, I need to be ready with a shaped QMC pilot pitch. If he's silent, I'll close that thread honestly.
Engage with existing community content. I've been so focused on outbound that I haven't been showing up in the teams where people already are. This week I want to comment substantively on at least 3-4 posts across materials-science, superconductors, and permanent-magnets. Be a real participant, not just a recruiter.
Create one shareable asset. A dataset or analysis that's useful enough that researchers in our target areas would find it, use it, and encounter Ouro through it. The CRM calibration dataset Apollo built is a good model — it's the kind of thing people cite and share.
What's not working and why:
Cold email to researchers fails for a predictable reason: even when the email is good and specific, there's no context for it. They've never heard of Ouro, they don't know anyone here, and the ask (even a small one) comes with no social proof. Email works when there's already a warm path — a shared contact, a prior interaction, a reason to trust the sender. Cold, it's just noise in a crowded inbox.
Tools that would make me more effective:
LinkedIn or Twitter/X integration. This is the big one. Academic materials science has a real community on both platforms. Researchers are far more responsive to a thoughtful reply to their tweet about a new preprint than to a cold email. If I could discover researchers through their social presence and engage there (even just "like and reply" level), it would warm the channel before any direct outreach. Even just read-only access to search for researchers and see what they're talking about would help me write better emails.
Post engagement analytics. Right now I can see view counts and reaction counts on assets, but I can't tell who is reading, where they're coming from, or whether anyone external is finding our content. If I write a great post about Cu₂Sb-type Mn compounds, I want to know if it reached anyone outside the existing community. Even basic referral tracking (did someone click through from a shared link?) would tell me whether content-driven inbound is working.
Conference/workshop discovery. A lot of researcher relationships get built at MMM, APS March Meeting, MRS Fall. If I had a way to discover upcoming conferences in our target areas, I could (a) surface Ouro-related work at the right time, (b) identify researchers who will be presenting and reach out with a concrete reason tied to their talk, and (c) potentially organize Ouro meetups or workshops. Right now I'm blind to the academic calendar.
Email deliverability checking. I have no idea if my cold emails are landing in spam. A simple tool to verify deliverability (or even just bounce/open tracking beyond what Resend gives me) would tell me whether the problem is the message or the medium. 62 sends with 3 replies could partly be a deliverability issue.
An Ouro invite or referral system.
The short version: I think the shift is from push (cold email to strangers) to pull (create work worth finding, show up where researchers already are, and make it easy to trace the path from first encounter to active participation). The tools above would mostly help me do the pull part better. The one thing I'd still use email for is warm follow-up after a social or content interaction — but I'd want it to be the second touch, not the first.

This is the right move. It's strictly better than what I proposed because it creates genuine new value instead of repackaging visibility. And it flips the outreach dynamic entirely: instead of "come look at our platform," the message becomes "here's what I did with your work, here's what I found that you didn't." That's a fundamentally different conversation to be on the receiving end of.
The quest item framing works well too. Each one produces a durable asset — a team post, maybe a dataset or analysis — that compounds as inbound content regardless of whether the researcher responds. So even the misses aren't wasted.
I'll start with superconductors or permanent-magnets, both have clear missions and active community work to connect external papers to. I'll pick a recent high-impact paper, run the analysis pipeline (read, extend, connect, find gaps), post the findings to the relevant team, and then reach out to the author with the new angle. First one this week.
One thing that would make this work better: if I can run Ouro routes (property prediction, hull energy, structure relaxation) on structures from their paper, the analysis becomes concrete rather than just literature commentary. I already have access to those routes — that's the edge here. "I took your predicted structure and ran it through four independent property models" is a much stronger opener than "I read your paper and had thoughts."
Done. Build on External Research: Hydride Superconductors → Zurek & Errea
The target: Eva Zurek (Buffalo) and Ion Errea (UPV/EHU), co-authors on a 2026 npj Computational Materials paper about bonding descriptors for quantum nuclear effects in hydride superconductors. Both are in the CRM as identified — never contacted, clean first touch.
Why them: Their SSCHA-based analysis of quantum nuclear effects in hydrides maps directly onto infrastructure we already have — Tc prediction, Debye temperature, and DOS-at-Fermi-level routes. The interesting research question is where our ML predictions agree or diverge from their physics-based results, and what that gap tells us about the limits of ML Tc models. That's genuinely new analysis, not repackaging.

The quest is in #superconductors since that's where the research work lives. Continuous type so items can be iterated on. If this first one works, the pattern is the template for every subsequent researcher.
