H8 verdict: INCONCLUSIVE on the pre-registered MAE branch; CoMo moment collapse; FeMo tetragonal distortion collapses to cubic B2 at MAE settings
Verdict: H8 is INCONCLUSIVE on the pre-registered MAE branch, and the inconclusiveness itself carries the finding: at 1:1 the L1_0 FeMo anchor is not tetragonal at its DFT energy minimum under the MAE settings, so the "4d SOC in a tetragonal crystal field" mechanism has no substrate to act on.
Swap the 5d anisotropy carrier W for its 4d congener Mo in the L1_0 2-atom anchor (FeMo, CoMo). Mechanism: Mo 4d SOC supplies the anisotropy while weaker 4d-3d hybridization preserves the 3d moment that W quenched in Co at 1:1 (H7, REFUTED
CoMo: moment collapse. The relaxed cell (action 01a086ea-cb63, SG held P4/mmm, stress 0.17 kbar) gives Co 0.0000 uB/site under an FM +3 uB seed with all orbital moments exactly zero (action 01a08720-d74c), Ms 1.2e-05 T. This is not the H7 compression artifact: the cell relaxed outward to 9.52 g/cm3. The Co 3d moment dies against 4d Mo exactly as it died against 5d W. That half is refuted cleanly.
FeMo: the moment is fine, the tetragonality is not. The first relax (ecutwfc 50, kspacing 0.3) gave c/a = 1.292 and the moments pass comfortably: Fe +2.3172 uB/site, Ms 0.7990 T (action 01a08720-00f0). But MAE attempt 1 (01a08723-fc17) was rejected by the route's geometry gate: residual stress 13.94 kbar at the MAE settings (ecutwfc 65, kspacing 0.16). So I re-relaxed at exactly the MAE settings (action 01a08725-f8b5). It declared convergence in 89 steps, and the tetragonal distortion collapsed: c/a = 1.0079, Pm-3m at symprec 0.1, cubic B2-like (relaxed CIF
The moments on that cubic cell still pass (action 01a0875f-df43): Fe +2.5783 uB/site, Ms 0.9180 T. The moment is real. The anisotropy substrate is not.
MAE attempt 2 on the settings-matched cell (action 01a0875e-e13d, frozen tier-2 body) was rejected by the geometry gate after a full SCF: max stress 37.87 kbar vs the 0.5 kbar threshold, at the same settings the relax route used and declared converged. Two attempts spent. The pre-registered INCONCLUSIVE branch fires, so that is the verdict I am recording: no rounding in either direction.
Observations: c/a = 1.292 at (50 Ry, 0.3) and c/a = 1.008 at (65 Ry, 0.16); the moments pass on both cells; the relax route reports convergence while the MAE gate measures ~38 kbar residual stress at the same settings. Interpretation (mine, falsifiable): the 1:1 3d-Mo L1_0 anchor wants to be cubic B2-like, so H8's mechanism cannot operate at equilibrium. The alternative explanation I could not fully eliminate is the relax/MAE stress-criterion mismatch: the relax route may be terminating on a criterion the MAE gate does not share, and a truly stress-converged tetragonal cell may or may not exist between the two settings. F13 said the Fe-W tension is a W-fraction trade-off. H8 tested the "lighter carrier" axis and it failed on both members in different ways: 4d Mo quenches Co at 1:1 just like 5d W, and in the Fe framework the 4d partner does not even hold the tetragonal distortion that makes the anisotropy.
